For students currently doing their PLR assessment. As of today the new Consolidated Index 2009-2010 is now on the shelves and the 2008-2009 has been removed. This means that some of the volume/page references may have changed since you last consulted the index.
Back by popular demand – now that the reality of PLR and Legal Method has hit home – three more paper based legal research workshops have been timetabled.
Follow the link below to find out more and sign-up. Places are limited to 8.
New for this academic year are the i-Guides; a series of 7 podcasts designed to answer a number of legal research questions, from “Starting Paper Research” to “Researching EC Law”.
These short introductions (all under 10 minutes) allow you to learn at your own pace either from scratch or use them as a refresher. At the end of each one you have the opportunity to test your understanding in a ‘test and feedback’ type way.
GDL students you’ve already been given a brief demonstration of where they are located and how they work, however they are now included in your Legal Method – go to: ELITE > My ELITE > My Courses > GDL Legal Method 09/10 > [left hand menu] Unit 3 Legal Problem Solving > [link at bottom of page] Unit 3 – Legal Problem Solving > Library i-Guides.
For all other students, you’ll find these invaluable guides in the My library area of Elite. We hope you enjoy using them and would appreciate any feedback you might have too. Send your comments to natasha.skeen@lawcol.co.uk
There are two new legal research workshops for you to sign-up to and attend starting on Thursday 24 September. They cover electronic research and print based research.
You can find the sign-up sheets and further details of the sessions at
- My Centre

- Legal Research Workshops folder.
I look forward to seeing you.
Well the chance of winning some anyway. Actually when I say money I mean vouchers. LexisNexis have launched their annual student survey and have added some remuneration as an incentive for your cooperation.
They’d like to know – amongst other things:
- How you conduct your research
- Where you go to find information
- What your thoughts are on legal research training
The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete and all students who complete it are eligible to be entered into a prize draw to win £1,000 of Virgin vouchers. Ten further entrants will be drawn at random and will each win £100 of Virgin vouchers. The closing date for entries this year is 20th March.
Michael Carter is the new Westlaw and Lawtel Student Representative here at the College of Law, Birmingham.
Please Email him at michael.carter04@lawcol.co.uk with:
- Any problems which you are experiencing with either database
- Any help needed with legal research tasks
- Any guidance needed on using either database.
He will also be holding twice weekly drop-in clinics in the Library to deal with any of the above in person. The times of these clinics are posted around the Library.
If you need any assistance finding or contacting him, please ask at the library counter.
