Access Rights at Birmingham’s Universities

For those of you for whom the words ‘Christmas’ and ‘Holiday’ translate as ’study’ and not ‘well earned rest’, what follows is a list of access rights to some of our local universities.  Please be aware that this list covers reference rights only and not borrowing rights.

In order to reserve library facilities exclusively for the use of College students, we do not participate in reciprocal access schemes with libraries in other universities (for example, the SCONUL scheme).  However, university libraries in Birmingham will admit College students on reference-only basis on the following terms:

Birmingham City University (formerly UCE)

  • Bring 2 forms of ID with name and address on.
  • One passport photo
  • Card issued and valid for one year

Birmingham University

  • Take CoL ID card and you will be issued with a vacation pass
  • In term time take suitable ID such as a driver’s licence, a passport or a utility bill and you will be allowed 10 visits in any 12 month period

Aston University

  • Proof of identity e.g. driver’s licence, passport, cheque or credit card
  • Proof of address e.g. recent utility bill, bank statement, rent book

You will then need to complete a registration form and will be given the option of:

A free day pass, allowing you access for the rest of that day

OR

A regular visitor pass. You will be issued with a swipe card, costing £2.50, which allows entry to the building up to 31 October of the current year. This option avoids the need to reregister on each visit
