This weekend, the Library’s opening hours are:
- Saturday 1 November: 12.00pm-6.00pm
- Sunday 2 November: 12.00pm-6.00pm
The College premises will open at 8.30am, and the Library will open at 12.00pm (noon).
The College’s IT department will be performing routine maintenance on Birmingham’s wide area network on Thursday evening. Unfortunately, this means that we will not have access to networked IT services from 6pm on Thursday 30 October. The library will be open as normal, but our computers will be out of order, with no access to the college network, internet, email and elite. Normal service will resume on Friday morning.
This weekend, the Library’s opening hours are:
- Saturday 25 October: 12.00pm-5.00pm
- Sunday 26 October: 12.00pm-5.00pm
Both the College premises and the Library will open at 12.00pm (noon).
Did you know that there is a Westlaw UK and Lawtel Support Group on Facebook? The group provides a forum for students to request help and receive legal research tips from Westlaw and Lawtel professionals. If you are a Facebook user, simply search for ‘Westlaw UK’, and join the Westlaw UK and Lawtel Support Group.

I have received a number of enquiries from students who wish to use library facilities at local universities. Most universities are part of the SCONUL Library Access Scheme, and they allow access to students from other universities with SCONUL library cards.
Unfortunately, the College of Law is not part of the SCONUL scheme, and we can not provide you with a SCONUL library card. One of the reasons we are not members of the scheme is because we can not reciprocate library access – we are unable to accomodate non College of Law students in our libraries.
If you wish to visit a local university library, you will have to follow their access policy for alumni or members of the general public. These policies vary across institutions, but they are generally advertised on the university’s library website, under ‘access’ or ‘visitor’.
If you require any further information, please contact Jackie Hanes, Information Officer.
Sorry – Fully Booked
The Library will be running an extra Introduction to Printed Legal Research workshop at 11.00am on Friday 24 October. The workshop will include a demonstration of Halsbury’s Laws, Halsbury’s Statutes, and Current Law. Students will also have the opportunity to practice using the resources, with support from the Information Officer.
The workshops are voluntary, but places are limited to 20 students per session. If you would like to attend a workshop, please contact the library to sign up. You can contact the library in person, or by telephone (01483 216041) or email (library.brm@lawcol.co.uk).
Please note that only students who sign up can attend the workshop. Also, students who sign up, are expected to attend workshops, or give notice of cancellation, so that their place may be offered to another.
This weekend, the Library’s opening hours are:
- Saturday 11 October: 12.00pm-6.00pm
- Sunday 12 October: 12.00pm-6.00pm
The College premises will open at 8.30am, and the Library will open at 12.00pm (noon).
As you may already know library staff are restricted in the help they can give LPC students during their Practical Legal Research assessment period. The guidance below sets out what we can and can’t advise on during PLR.
We can advise on:
a) where to find books and how to access databases
b) sources of further guidance on how to use paper and electronic research tools
c) problems caused by the library stock or with access to databases
We can not advise on:
a) the relative merits of different resources for researching issues raised by the assessment
b) choice of search terms, or how to manipulate search terms
c) the steps needed to ensure that research is full and accurate (for example, updating techniques)
d) interpretation of material that students may retrieve in the course of their research
e) the content and structure of a research report
If you’re unsure whether your query can or cannot be answered by library staff, please speak to the Jackie Hanes (Information Officer) in the first instance. You can usually find me in the office behind the Library Enquiry Desk. Alternatively, email the Library on Library.BRM@lawcol.co.uk
