New Books November 2009

Now that the panic of PLR (LPC) and Legal Research (BVC) is over and Christmas is nearly upon us you may be interested in doing a little light reading.  The following titles, although about law, require no note taking, paper or electronic research and are also available to borrow:

  Author/Title Classmark
   J. Herring.  The Woman Who Tickled Too Much.

This book gives true accounts of real life stories within Britain’s Law courts, giving an insight into the difficult questions and decisions our legal institutions deal with everyday.

 LITR
   T. Kevan.  Baby Barista and the Art of War.

Based upon the blog the author writes for The Times, this is a fictional account of life within the legal profession; it’s main character being a pupil barrister in chambers.

 LITR
   M. Mansfield.  Memoirs of a Radical Lawyer.

Mansfield has taken on some of the most difficult and challenging cases of our times and won plenty. In ‘Memoirs of a Radical Lawyer’ he dissects many of them, revealing his motivations, cross examination techniques, subtlety and charm.

As it is a PT GDL study weekend our opening hours are as follows:

  • Saturday 5 December: 12 – 8pm
  • Sunday 6 December: 12 – 6pm

please note the earlier closing time on Sunday.

For students currently doing their PLR assessment.  As of today the new Consolidated Index 2009-2010 is now on the shelves and the 2008-2009 has been removed.  This means that some of the volume/page references may have changed since you last consulted the index.

We are beginning to receive complaints from students about noise levels in the library.  Please be reminded that the library is a silent study area, any group work or general conversations should be conducted elsewhere.  It gets particularly noisy around workshop changeover times, it would be appreciated if you could enter and leave the library as quietly as possible at these times.

Also, please can food and/or drink be consumed in the basement cafe or other parts of the building.  We allow bottled water only in the library.

Thanks for your co-operation.

You may have received an email from the LexisNexis student rep. Kim McKenzie about this certification test.  Offered by LexisNexis the LexisLibrary database provider,  it can be used to demonstrate to potential employers that you have reached a level of competence in using LexisLibrary’s online research services.

You’re given an hour to complete the test, it consists of 15 questions and the pass mark is 13/15.

Click the link below to find out more and register to take the test – the College of Law subscribes to all the resources that you will need to complete it.

Welcome to library services. While you are registered at the College of Law you will have access to an exceptionally wide range of legal databases. We have invested in an authentication system which allows you to use your Student Reference Number (SRN) and your College password to login whether on or off campus.

If you are new to the College of Law this year, you will have been sent your College Network login details inside your joiners pack. Your joiners pack also includes information on how to register your details online. If you encounter problem registering your details please contact the IT Services Desk ( mailto:it.servicedesk@lawcol.co.uk ).

To Access the databases open ELITE and click on the ‘My Library’ tab which will take you to the Library homepage. This will present you with all of the electronic resources to which the College subscribes.

Any problems with accessing the databases either at home or in College?

Please email Elite.Administrator@lawcol.co.uk.”

A few tips for making your time here both useful and enjoyable:

  • In your first couple of weeks keep your Research Guide by your PC at all times (the blue spiral bound document).  As the year goes on, you’ll rely on it less but you’ll find it invaluable even when you go into practice.
  • Check the Library blog at least a couple of times a week to find out useful information such as times of legal research sessions, weekend opening hours or updates to databases.
  • Please respect your fellow students wishes for silent study in the library.  And finally…
  • If in doubt about anything please come and ask a member of staff or contact us via email at lib.BRM@lawcol.co.uk

We look forward to working with you.

The Library Team

With the start of a new year, based on comments made in last year’s student survey, the following policies are being implemented in the library:

  • The library may be used for silent study only
  • With the exception of bottled water, no food or drink should be consumed the library .

Though this is primarily directed to returning students, who were used to a different policy it does apply to all library users.  We would like to direct you to the basement area and other meeting venues around the building for any non-study oriented activities.

Thank you.

Your student associates for this year are:

Kim McKenzie for Lexis

and

Tom Lathom for Westlaw

They will be available throughout the year to provide tips, advice and training sessions on using the legal databases.  Look out for:

On Thursday 1 October, The Times newspaper published an eight page supplement to mark the occasion of the opening of the new Supreme Court in the UK.

If you want to get an overview of what it is, how it works, who the Justices are; you can find the supplement in The Times Law Report box in the General Reference section or just ask at the counter.

For more law news and more on the Supreme Court go to http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/law/

The following new titles have recently appeared in full text on Westlaw:

  • Journal of Housing Law
  • International Journal of the Built Environment

From now on where you see citations for these titles on Westlaw they’ll be hyperlinked in red.

New for this academic year are the i-Guides; a series of 7 podcasts designed to answer a number of legal research questions, from “Starting Paper Research” to “Researching EC Law”.

These short introductions (all under 10 minutes) allow you to learn at your own pace either from scratch or use them as a refresher.  At the end of each one you have the opportunity to test your understanding in a ‘test and feedback’ type way.

GDL students you’ve already been given a brief demonstration of where they are located and how they work, however they are now included in your Legal Method – go to: ELITE > My ELITE > My Courses > GDL Legal Method 09/10 > [left hand menu] Unit 3 Legal Problem Solving > [link at bottom of page] Unit 3 – Legal Problem Solving > Library i-Guides.

For all other students, you’ll find these invaluable guides in the My library area of Elite.  We hope you enjoy using them and would appreciate any feedback you might have too.  Send your comments to natasha.skeen@lawcol.co.uk
